Ohio woman dies after she was accidentally shot by her child

An Ohio woman has died after she was accidentally shot by her 2-year old. The incident occurred in the woman’s home in the town of Akron, Ohio. Laura Ilg, 31, who was 33 weeks pregnant, called emergency services to report she’d been injured by her toddler after he got hold of her gun.

Norwalk’s Police Chief David Smith revealed to reporters on Tuesday that he was one of the policemen who arrived at the scene soon after 1 p.m. on Friday in response to the woman’s numerous 911 calls.

The Police explained that the incident happened while they were handling a firearm in the home. The exact circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation. The victim was rushed to the Fisher-Titus Medical Center for an emergency cesarean section, but the baby was not saved. She was pronounced dead at 5:10 p.m., four hours after her first call was placed, according to the Police.

In addition to the discharged gun- a SIG Sauer P365 along with a shell casing and the loaded magazine, the home also included a loaded shotgun and rifle, according to the police. Guns should never be left loaded and unsupervised, Smith advised families.

“Trigger locks, gun safes, there’s a million varieties, and they aren’t that expensive. At the very least, leave them unloaded,” he said.

The child involved in the shooting was also taken to the hospital for evaluation and was reunited with his father afterward. The Akron Police Department is investigating the incident. They have not released any additional information about the woman or the child involved in the shooting. The case has not resulted in any arrests.
